Athletics

In swimming, teams are often scored based on how many heats are won, not by how much team they are won by.  Often, coaches will place their slowest swimmers against the fastest swimmers of other schools, conceding those heats.  In other heats, they will place their fastest swimmers against the slowest of other schools.  In this situation, it is therefore possible for a swim team that has a slower average speed to potentially win the meet by strategically allocating its athletes across the heats.

For a more concrete example, please consider the following chart:

As you can see, the Michigan Wolverines were dominated in rebounding margin, but ended up winning the game anyway, 74-64.  A weakness that plagued Michigan for much of the 2008-2009 season, Illinois looked to exploit the lack of a Wolverine post presence.  Knowing it would not win the matchup with Illinois' big men, the Wolverines played on their strength in their guards, with solid FT%, FG%, and efficient three-point shooting.  By sending out a lineup that excel in those categories, Michigan won enough of the "Factors of Winning" to win the game.

In the court of law, Blotto is used to poke holes in the testimonies of opponents.  Time spent on each line of defense is the resource to be allocated (Page).
